"Painted early in my painting career, I had to get up early to capture Bernie Tidmarsh making horse shoes from scratch in his 400 year old forge in Crudwell, North Wiltshire. With his assistant bellowing the fire, it had hardly changed in all that time.
A lot of modern farriers use preformed standard size for horse shoes and the hoof is made to fit the shoe. Bernie still does it the old fashioned way and makes the shoe to fit the individual horse's foot. Bernie is still hard at work, but unfortunately the forge has gone. It's now somebody's living room!." Jack Russell MBE
